Hey Jon. I hope everything is going well in the MTC.
We had a great 4th of July week. I hiked Provo Peak with Heber on Tuesday. On Wednesday I took mom to Maddy's apartment on my motorcycle and we watched the morning parade with Maddy and Heber. Then we went to Colonial Days and hung out for several hours and went to Stadium of Fire in the evening.
As usual, Chance and Javi didn't want to go to Stadium of Fire so I was trying to give their tickets away but then at the last minute they said they wanted to come. OneRepublic played and Chance and Javi seemed to have a good time.
On Friday I hiked Mount Nebo with Chance, Javi, and Steve DuBose. It was a really good hike and a good trail until the very end where the trail ended and you had to basically rock-climb the last 500 feet up. That's where I stopped and turned around. When you're on the side of a cliff and every time you take one step up the gravel you're standing on slides 6 inches down the mountain, it's too sketchy for me. I don't care about bragging rights I just hike for fun, exercise, and to see some great scenery so as far as I'm concerned, mission accomplished!
Today I'm headed out to Grand Teton National Park for 10 days. I hope to get a permit to do the 40 mile Teton Crest Trail and do some other hikes. I'm taking a (new) stand up paddleboard and my kayak so I might spend some time in the water. If I run out of things to do in the Tetons there are some hikes I'd like to do in Yellowstone. I just don't know how the permit situation will go. Also, it's serious bear country where I'm going and they say to hike in groups of no less than 3 people for safety so I'm going to be looking around for another group of hikers that I can tag along with. Hopefully it all works out. And hopefully GTNP is as beautiful as Stanley Lake. Even if I can't get a permit it should be fun to hammock for a while and kayak up there.
Work hard and don't get frustrated with the language. It just takes time and you've got plenty of that. Try to look around for other missionaries who are struggling and go out of your way to talk with them and be an emotional support. If you focus all your energy on others then you'll forget about your own troubles really quickly.
Love ya,
Dad
