February 4 - Week 34

Hi Jon -

I hope you are well. I hope your medicine is kicking in and that your body is strong and getting stronger. Your letters suck dude. Seriously mom is freaking out she wants to know everything but I keep trying to calm her down and tell her that everything is fine and that you're just busy. I know writing emails is probably the most boring thing ever and the last thing you want to do so I'll keep trying to sooth mom's feathers and calm her down.

Everything at home is fine. We had a fun Superbowl weekend. I didn't invite a lot of people over because every time I do there is too much noise and distraction and I can hardly keep up with what's going on with the game. Maddy and Heber came over before and after the game but didn't watch the game here. The Rams lost which was cool because I didn't think they deserved to be in the Superbowl as they beat the Saints only due to an officiating error. Tom Brady got his 6th Superbowl ring and I think it's pretty cool - I watched a documentary on him last week and he seems like a pretty cool guy, great family, great husband and father, etc.

I interviewed with the CEO of Lucid Software last week and I couldn't read him at all. Then I didn't hear anything from them for 4 days so I assumed they weren't going to go forward but then today they scheduled a phone call with me later this week. I also interviewed for a job as the head of applications at Nu Skin right here in Provo and they seemed to like me but we'll see. So that's two potential jobs that are moving in the right direction but I'm not holding my breath that either one of them is exactly what I want to do next.

Last week I helped Todd Thompson give a priesthood blessing to his daughter Anna and we had stake conference. I didn't like the Saturday afternoon session at all but I really liked the Stake Leadership session and the general session. There's so much change going on in the church it's hard to keep track of everything. They started talking about stuff in our Stake Leadership training that I hadn't heard before so I got really confused. Handbook #2 says one thing but then I heard there is a letter from the First Presidency that says something different. I couldn't find the letter until Adam Olsen showed me how to see all the letters not just the First Presidency letters and then I found what I was looking for. But it just goes to show that with so much change some leaders are clear on the new program and some leaders are left out of the loop even though they are really trying. This time it's about the ward mission leaders and basically there's not going to be a ward missionary leader in our ward anymore and now one of my EQ counselors is going to basically be the ward mission leader. It's weird but I support the changes as long as I can figure out what they are.

I have something I want you to think about this week that your mission is a mirror of your life. If you figure out money on your mission, you will have it figured out in life. If you are broke at the end of every month, you may have this problem in life. You need to get this figured out in the mission. If you cannot figure out how to get along with your companions, you will have problems in later in your life with your ‘final’ companion – your wife. A person who breaks promises in the mission will usually be a promise breaker in life. A person who can't be 100% obedient on their mission will find it hard to be an obedient church member after their mission. If you learn the habits of fasting in your mission, there is a reflection of this later in life. There are hundreds of examples. Get it right in the mission and you will get it right in life.

I'm super proud of you Jon and love you a lot. Have fun, try to laugh every day, and listen to the spirit.

Love,

Dad
