It's birthday season again! We had everyone over for dinner at our house last Sunday for GayNell's birthday and then we all went over to GayNell's house last night for a dinner to celebrate Marvin's birthday. Pretty soon it will be mom & Javi's birthday, then you, Aimar, and Maddy.

Mom and I went to a Howard Jones concert on Thursday night. You probably don't know Howard Jones but he was one of my favorite artists when I was a freshman and sophomore in high school.

On Friday I volunteered to chaperone a field trip for Chance's theater group. We went to Corner Canyon High School in Draper for an all-day theater competition. Each high school presented a one act play between 30 and 45 minutes long. Chance's play was called "the dark road" and was about a female German concentration camp guard being tried for war crimes after World War 2. A reporter was trying to investigate how and why she went from being a nice German girl and somehow turned into a really brutal concentration camp guard being super mean to Jews. The play showed different memories from her life and showed how she slowly became this monster. It was really hard to watch for me - super emotional. Chance's role was that of the commander of the concentration camp who trained and encouraged the guards to be mean. That was really hard to watch too. But his theater group did really well and got 2nd place in the competition. One judge called Chance out and said "you did a great job - good job being so creepy" and another judge asked him how he was able to yell so loudly in people's faces and not spit on them. The cast laughed and said that Chance did spit on them all the time. hahaha. It was nice to be able to spend the day with Chance and see him perform - an opportunity I don't get very often.

Last week was BYU's big end-of-season volleyball tournament. There were 2 games a day on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. I missed the Thursday night game because of the concert I went to but I got to see all the rest of the games. BYU did really poorly - we played our 2nd string players in one game and lost. Then we played the best team in the nation #1 University of Hawaii and we lost badly to them. Those Hawaii guys were just really good and we couldn't compete against them.

Mom and Javi went to Costco last week and came home with a badminton set. Javi couldn't wait to set it up in the backyard even though it rained a couple of days last week. When we did finally set it up he wanted to play it a ton and we even took it to Grandma's house yesterday and played it there. I've never seen Javi get into any sport at all but now he wants to play badminton all day every day. He even plays against Aimar and beats him.

I've been working on the house and trying to fix all the dents in the basement walls from you, Chance, Javi, and all your friends over the years. I have filled in all the holes, sanded, and done touch-up painting - paint which was really hard to find and took me 3 times buying the wrong shade of brown until I finally got a good match. Anyway, just as I got the basement looking really good, Javi had James Hall and a couple other friends over Saturday night and this time Javi through a sword at the boys, narrowly missed knocking the television screen over, but did crash into the window breaking one of our window blinds. I seriously wanted to kill him. Every day I walk around the house and find something new that is broken or dented or needs to be fixed.

That's all my updates for now. I want to share a thought on habits.

When you are in the mission, you will get a chance to develop habits that will stay with you forever. Things like prayer, reading scriptures, getting a testimony, and learning to know when the spirit is talking to you. Well I’ve even got another one. I was never really a dirty person before the mission but I did not floss my teeth every day. I did floss once in a while but not every day. Well on the mission I was so concerned about my teeth as they had no fluoride in the water and I was single and did not want to come back from my mission with teeth that looked like termites were living in them. I made a habit of flossing every day. That is one of the habits that I get to keep for the rest of my life. Make as many of these kinds of habits as you can. Especially prayer and scripture study.

I hope you are having fun and teaching a lot.

Love,

Dad
