Wow I've had a busy week. Last Saturday we picked up our new exchange student Aimar at the airport. He was very friendly and seemed to fit right in with us from the very first moment and now more than a week later I think Aimar fits with our family even better. We gave him the option to go to church with us on Sunday or stay home and he said he wanted to go to church so that was cool. I think the young men and young women must have welcomed him pretty well because he says he wants to go back every week.
On Monday we had to register Aimar for school and it took 6 hours no joke. First we went to Timpview and then they sent us to the district office for some paperwork which was never even needed and then we had to go to the health department to get a tuberculosis test done and then back to Timpview to register Aimar and wait in a long line to speak with a counselor about his classes. We were in line at 8am and didn't get done with the counselor until after 2pm but at the end of the day Aimar got his Timpview student ID card and was registered for classes so that was one more thing behind us. On Monday night we went to JohnnyP's house to watch the movie "Galaxy Quest" in his backyard on a blowup movie screen. Chris and Rebecca and their families were there so it was a fun event and we made smores.
On Tuesday we drove to Wrightwood and spent the night there. Chance had too many obligations in Provo (work + school orientation training) so we went to California without him. Mom got really sick overnight - stomach flu worse than I've ever seen her get - so she was up all night. We were going to go to Hollywood on Wednesday but she was too sick so we just stayed in Wrightwood. When she felt good enough to at least sit in a car for a little while we drove to Anaheim and checked into our hotel and then she slept for the rest of the day and through the night. Javi, Aimar, and I got pepperoni grinders at Delias in Riverside and we went to Newport Beach to play in the surf while mom slept at the hotel.
On Thursday we went to Disneyland all day long and then on Friday we went to Hollywood in the morning and to Venice Beach in the afternoon. On Saturday we went to the Wrightwood Country Club in the morning and then to your Aunt Jenny's wedding to Oz in the evening. And then on Sunday we went to Sacrament Meeting in Wrightwood and then drove home to Utah, arriving just before midnight. We did so much I need a vacation from my vacation! So tired.
The big news of the week is that Maddy and Heber got engaged on Tuesday night! It was the most anti-climatic thing ever because they have be saying "don't plan any trips in December" for at least a month and we've known they had already bought an engagement ring since about 2 weeks ago. So it wasn't a surprise but I'm glad it's not a secret anymore and we can finally talk about everything with everyone without worrying about who knows and who doesn't know. The reception will be on Thursday December 27 and their sealing will be on Friday December 28. So sad you won't be here to see it but my brother Chris was on his mission when I got married and it's way more common than you would think.
Aimar is a lot different than Diego. He doesn't care about fashion or sightseeing at all - like he didn't care about anything in Hollywood he just wants to go to the beach and play in the water. He is very athletic and competitive and he turns everything into a competition. When we go to the beach it's a competition about who can body surf the same wave the furthest. Then we went to the hotel pool and it was a competition about who could make the biggest splash in the pool or who can hold their breath under water the longest. At the Wrightwood Country Club the competition was who could do the coolest dive off the diving board and who could win at tennis. Everything is a competition! But Aimar is really fun and really funny. He laughs easily and never gets offended when we joke with him. Aimar and Javi became good friends really fast and they chase and poke each other nonstop. Aimar met cousin Nate Carr on Friday night and by Saturday night they were best friends and had their own inside jokes already.
New student orientation is today and the first day of class is on Wednesday so things are going to change a lot for us. Summer feels like it is over already. Maddy has finals this week and her last day at work is Friday and then has 2 weeks off. We were going to go backpacking together but now she needs to do wedding stuff so I don't know what will happen.
We miss you and love reading your letters every week. Keep up the good work and take time each day to smell the roses and have a good laugh.
Love ya,
Dad
